Name: Desi Robinson Age: 20 From: Bronx, NY Interests: Working out, meditating, dancing (reggae), taking spur of the moment trips Quotable: "the best kind of exercise is the kind that you can share with a man!"
FC: I understand you recently moved to NY, how has that change been for you? DB: Getting used to the big city has been hard...I'm originally from CT and it’s totally different out here (than) in the Bronx...learning how to take the subway has been crazy, I still haven't gotten the hang of it.
FC: Yea and people aren’t exactly friendly during rush hour. Can you describe to me your typical week considering you’re a model and a full time student at the University of CT? DB: Well, lets see, I spend Monday thru Thurs. in CT ...I'm a psychology major so my schedule is pretty full...dealing with psych, sociology, and social work courses, can be pretty trying but the material I am learning helps in my everyday life...I work part-time for the university, which helps fund my up and coming modeling career...on Fridays I usually travel back home to the Bronx to do some kind model work...lately I have been doing a lot of small time shoots to help build my portfolio...I am having a lot of fun with that, and it doesn't really get in the way of my school work which is a plus.
FC: I was wondering about that, you go to school in Conn but you live in the BX, I know people who travel to Conn. from NY but thats because they drive very fast. DB: (Laughs) I am one of those people it takes me about an hour and a half to get back and forth...I’m lucky that I haven’t been pulled over yet...sometimes, its like I blink and I've reached my destination.
FC: I’m sure a lot of men would like a fearless lady behind the wheel. You mentioned working out 2-3 times a week. Does that include any men rejecting exercises? DB: (Laughs) No not really the best kind of exercise is the kind that you can share with a man!
FC: Well I’m sure you love the attention but clear it up for us guys at the gym, what is the most attractive part of a mans body? DB: I have to say a man's chest is the most attractive part of his body...I mean for a man to have a chest like mine is just a turn off.
FC: (Laughs) You also like to dance. Name me three tracks that will have you on your feet for sure. DB: 3 tracks...you may not be familiar with them because they are reggae tracks...Backshot Time by Charley Blacks...Wine by Vybz Kartel...and Love and Affection by Pressure.
FC: What no reggaeton?? I guess it’s ok as long as we can see your body moving. Now what is this meditating thing you claim to do? DB: Well when I’m feeling too overwhelmed, I take myself away from the entire world...I usually go to the park, or in the winter I go into the basement, block out all noises, sit and do some deep breathing. I usually try to imagine that I am somewhere else, like the beach, it helps relax me and forget about all the stresses of the world...my world. I only catch myself doing this around midterms and finals though for obvious reasons...tests usually can cause high levels of anxiety, and before I can reach that point, I choose meditation as my escape.
FC: Did New York have anything to do with this or was this something you did before coming to the big apple? DB: This is something that I have been doing since high school. Meditation is something that I have embraced since I was about 14, when I began to deal with the pressure of school and social circles. as a teenager it is easy to be influenced by the wrong people, and when you are an only child, as I am, you don’t have the older sibling to look up to for advice, you only have your friends...and it takes you as an individual to make the right decisions in life. Through meditations I am able to sort through my problems and develop many different ways to deal with them. If anything I would say that NY has caused me to meditate a lot more now (laughs).
FC: You also mentioned that you like to take road trips out of the blue. Anything unplanned usually end up making good stories, do you care to share any of your journeys with us? DB: Ok lets see...there was this one time when a group of my friends and I decided that it would be fun to make a run up to Philly. I think it was a Sunday night, and we all had 8 am classes the next morning...but we were bored and hey, that’s what college kids do...well anywho, long story short, the trip that lasted about 18 hours ended in a couple piercings, tattoos and a mini shopping spree.
FC: Sounds amazing are the body decorations visible? DB: Well no not really, but I guess they could be depending on what kind of mood I’m in (laughs).
FC: I’m sure many readers are at this point dying to find out how they could get their eyes on them, any hints? DB: Unless they happen to be a photographer or someone that is lucky enough to be invited into my bedroom, I highly doubt it (laughs)
FC: There it is fellas, all you can do is be a fan for now (or pick up a camera and start practicing). Tell me do the meditation sessions inspire any of these spur of the moment trips? DB: Yes! Oh god yes! After a really good session I feel so free and I feel like I can do anything! It's not something that can happen after every session, just after those that I have when I feel like the weight of the world is on my shoulders.
FC: I’m not sure if you ever studied double meaning writing techniques in English class but I get a sense that these "meditation sessions" are quite intense. DB: They're not life altering or anything like that...it's just the feeling of clearing my mind can be so refreshing.
FC: Having just turned 20, where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
DB: Five years from now I see myself with my masters in social work...and perhaps posing on the cover of Cosmo. The degree comes first.
FC: Well good luck on that, thank you for letting us get to know you and we wish you nothing but the best DB: No problem...Thank you as well
